This morning Beck returned for his 5th appearance on the Los Angeles based radio show "Morning Becomes Eclectic", on KCRW 89.9 FM. He was joined by his backup band Smokey Hormel, Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Joey Waronker, Roger Manning, David Brown, and David Ralickie. They performed "Cold Brains", "Bottle of Blues", "O Maria", "Sing It Again", "Nobody's Fault But My Own", "Dead Melodies", "Tropicalia", and a spur of the moment "I Wanna Get With You (and your sister Debra)". "Beck and Al Hansen: Playing With Matches" has moved once again, this time hitting Plug In, located in Winnipeg, Canada. The show will run from November 20th to December 18th. Bibbe Hansen, Sean Carrillo, and Channing Hansen will be at the opening, but Beck himself will not be there.

According to sales figures released this morning by Soundscan, Mutations has debuted on the charts at #13, selling just under 75,000 copies.

As previously mentioned, Beck recently covered the song "Halo Of Gold", by Skip Spence and along with appearing on the Tropicalia single, it will also be featured on "More Oar: A Tribute to the Alexander 'Skip' Spence" scheduled for release in February of 1999.

:::::: 09.17.98: Playing With Matches Hits the East Coast ::::::

Beck and Al Hansen's art exhibit "Playing With Matches", which just finished a 3 month run in Santa Monica, has now moving to New York, at the Thread Waxing gallery. The exhibit opens September 17th. Beck also did a booksigning at Rizzoli Bookstore in NY on Sept 16 from 6-7:30.

The opening, which was MCed by Dr. Vaginal Creme Davis included performances by Marianne Faithfull, Beck, Channing (Beck's brother), and of course Bibbe Hansen (Beck's mom, Al's daughter).

As well as being nominated for Best Video from a Film for "Deadweight" (he lost out to Aerosmith), Beck was a presenter at this year's MTV Video Music Awards.

The 4 year old Beck song "Megaboob" is included in Julien Nitzberg's new film entitled "Bury Me In Kern County" which is making the festival circuit now. "Megaboob" will only be included in the movie, and not the soundtrack, which was rumored to come out on Nickelbag Records, but they don't know if it'll come out.

Beck's first American TV performance of "Hollow Log" was part of "Where It's At: Rolling Stone's State of the Union" which celebrated Rolling Stone's 30th Anniversary. It aired on ABC May 21st.

The Santa Monica Museum of Art is celebrating its re-opening with an art exhibit featuring works by Beck and his late Grandfather Al Hansen. The exhibit, titled "Beck and Al Hansen: Playing With Matches," is running from May 9th to July 15th and is featuring collages, sculptures and other pieces by the two." A full color book is also be available. On the members opening night Beck did a performance piece titled "New Age Evisceration 1", which consisted of Beck + band members in wigs, sandals, fake mustaches; a 10 foot tall cardboard computer monitor, keyboards getting sawed in half, and last but not least a dolphin with a strap-on penis.

Beck's Pizzicato Five remix has NOT made it onto their album due to his workload at the moment. For now, the remix has been shelved.

There's been quite some controversy about this. RTMARK has released "Deconstructing Beck", a "collection of brilliant but allegedly illegal resamplings of Beck, produced by Illegal Art with the help of $5,000 gathered by RTMARK from anonymous donors." Read more about it here.
