Beck has completed a days worth of filming on his first feature film, "Recycler", in which he plays himself in 9 years. The film is being done by longtime friend and collaborator Steve Hanft and tells the story of a man searching for a synthesizer for his band, meeting interesting characters along the way. Beck made a surprise appearance at Beth Orton's sold out show at the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles. Billed as "Silverlake Menza", Beck borrowed Beth's guitar and harmonica and played 4 songs: "Tropicalia", "Nobody's Fault", "Cold Brains" and "Lazy Flies."

:::::: 04.13.99: Playing With Matches Hits Japan ::::::
"Playing With Matches" will be opening in Japan next Wednesday (04.21.99) at the Laforet Gallery in the happening area of Tokyo called Harajuku in Shibuya. Coincidentally, Beck is doing a series of concerts in Tokyo and so will be able to attend the opening ceremonies at Laforet. Channing Hansen, Beck's brother will also perform at the opening event. One of the family's hosts in Japan is Crossbeat magazine and Shinko Publishing--PWM is being translated into Japanese and the book is being copied in its entirety! Sean Carrillo, Beck's stepdad, will be taping a lot of the events for an Al Hansen documentary that he has been assembling over the past two years.

Beck has been asked by King Buzzo of Melvins to make a guest appearance on the third album of their three album trilogy, "Crybaby" due out later this year on Mike Patton's (Bungle) new label, Ipecac Records. Beck is still considering it, and if he agrees, will work on it this summer.

Beck headlined Excite/HSX's post-Academy Awards show on Sunday the 21st of May at the House of Blues. The new song "Jockin' My Mercedes" was also played.
